What if I don't want to get hurt?

Firefighters are not there to go to an incident and increase the number of casualties. We are trained at every stage to ensure our own safety, and that of other firefighters. The entire Department operates with sophisticated systems. One is an accountability system, which ensures knowing the location, and time since contacted, of everybody on scene. Another is the two-in two-out rule which stipulates that no firefighter is ever unaccompanied or without a partner. Firefighters are issued with protective gear which is routinely inspected and replaced, along with breathing apparatus for use in smoke-filled environments.

Are any qualifications required?

To assist at an incident location, the minimum required qualification is Firefighter I. This is a combined written and practical exam administered by the Department. All instruction, books, protective gear, and most other essentials required to pass the exam, are provided by the Department. Members of the Department are always ready to help each other to master firefighting skills, and to explain concepts that a student might need help with.

What if I have no background in the fire service?

None is needed. Many members have family links to the fire service but many more do not, and have had their first contact with the fire service from volunteering.

What is the age range for membership?

To serve as a firefighter in the Department one must be at least 18 years old although age is seldom a barrier to membership!

Can I drive a fire engine?

Once given the proper in-depth training by type of vehicle, volunteers can drive a designated vehicle.

How do I join?

To become a member, one needs to go to the Application link and fill out the application, release authorization for a backround check, acknowledgement of drug free workplace policy and review the Firefighter Job Description. You must deliver your application in person to the Department Business meeting that is normally held at 7:00pm the second Wednesday of every month. Check our Calendar.

Are ladies welcome?

The Department also encourages females to join, and already has several lady members. Fires and Emergencies do not distinguish between the sexes, and women are offered the same opportunities for advancement and command as are the male fire-fighters.

What if I have a disability?

The Department welcomes the American with Disabilities Act, and is proud to observe it. As long as the disability does not mean that one could not perform the duties of a firefighter, then membership is open. Even if one might have difficulty performing the duties of a firefighter, one is still eligible to join if the disability can be minimized with "reasonable accommodations". For example, one of the Department members has diabetes and can suffer from reactions, but is still an active and participating member, with other members making sure he has taken proper health and safety precautions.

What if I am from a minority?

Not a problem. The Department does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, and religious beliefs. Members from as diverse a range of backgrounds are welcome since this enables us to serve our community The Department has members employed in all walks of life. The Department welcomes anyone who wishes to serve the community as a firefighter and rescue worker.
